Sometimes YOU Have to Get Your Heart Broken.

As you read the title, I know what you’re thinking, “she must be crazy”, but take a moment to hear me out.

In the mist of heartbreak, there are many lessons learned that you are unable to experience in any other way. Some people pass through our lives with the sole purpose teaching us a lesson that could have never been learned had they stayed. Immediately, when you think of a broken heart, I’m sure your mind races to the hurt or pain experienced from a previous romantic relationship. However, “romance” hurt is not the only type of heart break that one can endure. A broken heart can be experienced as a result of grief, betrayal, failure, and last but not least, love.

Let’s take a moment to journey down the un-pleasantries of memory lane. As much as it may pain you, briefly think back on a time you may have had your heart broken. It may have been days ago, weeks ago, months ago, or even years ago but briefly revisit that place….Notice that I said “visit” that place. Don’t live nor get stuck there but allow a flashback to be just that, A FLASHBACK. These are sometimes needed! A flashback serves as a reminder of what you do NOT need to resort back to.

Now, snap out of it. Fast forward to the moment where you realized that the broken heart served a purpose. Depending on how recently your heartbreak was experienced, you may still be ironing out the details of what exactly you’re supposed to be learning. You may even still be too blinded by your emotions to see the lesson clearly. But guess what, I have good news! There a IS LIGHT at the end of the tunnel! In the mist of your pain, work to see past your hurt to realize that heartbreak, whether past or present, is of no surprise to God!

Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many plans are in a man’s mind, But it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand (be carried out)”. There is so much goodness and reality wrapped inside these words. Here’s why – Yes, you thought they’d be here forever. Yes, it hurt, it honestly may STILL hurt. Yes, you failed and you were betrayed, it probably won’t be the last time but despite your personal feelings towards the heartbreak situation, God’s Will prevailed. Each and every individual in your life, served a purpose. Once God sees fit that that person’s purpose is complete, they will be removed. The removal is not always expected or wanted but a completed purpose of God will sometimes bring a lot of tugging to your heart.

I know I’ve seemed a bit harsh but sometimes the blatant truth must slap you in the face— and slap you hard! I’m not telling you what sounds good, I’m sharing the harsh realities that I had to learn on my own. But because I do not want my mistakes to become yours, here are three important things I’ve learned from ALL forms of heartbreak:

(1) Life still goes on. Once you realize that life still exists after the heartbreak, you WILL find a new drive and determination to push forward. Your new drive may be found by striving to prove someone wrong or allowing what previously served as grief, to serve as motivation to succeed. Despite the reasoning, your internal light bulb will go off, and you will realize, time stops for no one. Life will go on, even when you are not ready. (see Deuteronomy 31:8 NLT)

(2) Heartbreak reveals weaknesses. Although it will take time, heartbreak provides an opportunity for self-improvement. The beauty of life lessons are that they all serve a purpose, which is to grow, mature, and strengthen you. You may not have realized how strong you were until the love of your life left or until your loved one passed away. I know it was painful, but God equipped you, YES YOU, to handle it. (see Philippians 4:13 NLT)

(3) Life is unpredictable. No matter what you think, you are not smart enough to run your own life. You’ve planned and planned and planned, but still your plans were shattered into pieces. God has given you the free will to decide between your life and His Will. But you cannot have both. The moment you trust God and allow Him to take hold of your life, is the moment you embrace the unknowns of your future. It is the moment you solely depend on the author and finisher of Your Destiny! (see Romans 8:28 NLT).

No matter what type of heartbreak you have experienced, God’s Will WILL prevail. Not all aspects of His Will are pleasant but He is with you and He WILL see you through IF, you ALLOW Him to do so.
